Hi, I am Sandy. My father mentioned you will be joining me. Don’t worry, I am quite good at captaining a ship. Dad is just worried about his girl. I promise this will be a smooth trip.
I think we should start by getting some bait for the crabs. I've always loved fishing. It’s the ultimate relaxing activity. Crabbing, on the other hand, can be quite exciting.
I bet you wonder if this is a job for a girl. I am my father’s daughter so you can be sure it’s the right job for this girl. I practically grew up on the sea. I know a lot about ships and fish.
Dad told me to get my own crew. The right captain should be able to pick his sailors. I admit that this is something that I might need a hand with.
Good, we can set out for the first crabbing trip today. We will be checking the traps that are already set. We just need to take some fish to replace the bait after we get the crabs out.
Do you see those buoys? They mark the placing of the traps. I will anchor the boat next to the closest one. Can you help the men collect the crabs? I must stay at the rudder.
I told you it would go smoothly. I will take care of it here now. Can you go check if the warehouse is ready for our shipment of crabs? Dad was making some renovations there.
Have you eaten a king crab before? It’s a delicacy like no other. I am not a very good cook but I know a great restaurant in town where we can try the fresh crabs. Interested?
How did you like the crab? Delicious, right? I am going to check the boat before our next trip. She has quite a few years of service behind her and she could use some refitting. Care to join me?
I want to set a few traps on new locations. It would improve our daily catch, bring us more money, and impress dad. Yes, I am doing it mainly for the last reason.
This ship has seen quite a few years of service already. We don’t have time for a long refit but there are some repairs, that could be done easily. We just need some material.
Now I will feel more calm sailing on this old lady. Refit is done and new cages are loaded. Call the men aboard and we can go catch us some delicious crabs.
Let’s not forget the bait. Should we have some fish left after setting the traps, I would not mind taking them home with me. You can’t eat crab every day and the Alaskan codfish are tasty too.
Now let’s take those crabs out of the pods and into the barrels. I will leave that to the crew and you. These beast have claws sharp as knives. I don’t like to get close to them if I can help it.
We have an emergency! A crab has cut off the fingers of a crewman. He is bleeding profusely. I need to bandage his hand immediately. But someone has to navigate us through these rocks.
If we find those fingers the crab cut off, our man has a chance to have them reattached. Look behind the crates, they might have rolled over there.
The fingers are still in good condition. We need to go back to the city fast and take the man to the hospital. Hopefully, he can get those fingers reattached. Otherwise, his career as a crewmember is over.
Gary, the fingerless sailor, is in hospital. The doctor said they can fix him. We should fix the boat too. The waves have damaged the hull. Our quick repair earlier was not sufficient.
We have to pay for Gary’s surgery. He doesn’t have medical insurance so it’s quite a sum. But he risked his fingers for us, so it’s the least we can do.
This is a dangerous job. I never expected otherwise. But I am ready for whatever the sea throws at me. I hope you will tell that to my dad too. Do you feel like taking a farewell fishing trip with me?
Final Thank you for your help. Don't forget your reward, captain.
