Level Description
1 Hello, Captain. I’m Rachel Carson, an aspiring marine biologist in search of a job. With my father gone, I have to take care of my mother and our house. I should fix the walls first.
2 Currently, I am extremely busy organizing a funeral for my late father. It’s very stressful as the materials for the coffin are very costly.
3 I have seen a lot of scrap metal around our house. Let's collect it and use it to fix our house. I need to find a new job as I am running out of money.
4 I have heard that the Bureau of Fisheries is hiring and the salary looks good. This is a great opportunity. I should dress nicely for the interview to make an impression. Wish me luck.
5 I got the job! My task is to educate the public about ocean biology through a radio broadcast. Do not forget to tune in along with your crew, I promise it will be interesting.
6 The show is a great success. My supervisor has encouraged me to apply for a full-time position. This is amazing, as I will be able to work as an aquatic biologist, my lifelong dream!
7 I have been asked to write an article about local marine fauna. Can you secure me some specimens so I can provide our listeners with a detailed report? The more the merrier!
8 Our listeners would also love to learn more about the sedimentary rocks found in the nearby area. Provide me with some samples so I can get started on the report.
9 I have received dire news. My sister Marian has succumbed to pneumonia. I need to take good care of her children and my mother as well. We shall pull through this together.
10 I am better now as focusing on my work helped a lot. You see, I have been contacted by a publishing house to expand my latest essay into a book. I will need more paper!
11 I have so many wonderful ideas for the book. A nice stroll along the beach would help me sort out my thoughts. We can collect shiny stones along the way.
12 It’s been a while since my nephews had a bar of chocolate. I would love to surprise them with something sweet. I am positive that such a treat will make their day.
13 The new lab was built so fast thanks to your help. Now we just need some large metal tanks for the sharks we will study here. They must be big enough so the sharks can swim around.
14 Another animal that our audience would appreciate would be the Mackerel. Can you send your men to catch us some so we can get a proper illustration for the book?
15 Eels are such fascinating creatures who breed only once during their lifetime. I would like to build a small dam to observe their journey before they migrate further to the sea.
16 I believe we have obtained enough material for my upcoming publication. I think I will name it Under the Sea Wind. Let's sit back and sip on some wine to celebrate our efforts.
17 The reception for the book is great. Shame that the world is at war now and one of our harbours has been bombed by Japan. I am afraid that the sales of the book will suffer.
18 Lately, all the government fundings are directed to technical fields, testing some kind of pesticide, called Insect bomb. Can you bring me samples of the soil so I can study it myself?
19 The results lead me to believe that this pesticide harms both humans and nature. However, my editors have refused to publish my essay on it. I’ll tell you more about it over dinner.
20 Oh no! The ship that we have been using for our research has run into some rocks and it is in a bad shape. It needs to be fixed quickly or otherwise, we will be unable to continue in our work.
21 I have been promoted. To have your hard work recognized is a priceless feeling. Can your men help me to move my stuff to the new office? I can’t wait to get started.
22 Being a chief editor of publications gives me a lot of freedom to dedicate my time to topics that I am interested in. However, that means more administrative duties as well. I will need a new table.
23 I can do more fieldwork as well. Soon, I will depart on a scientific cruise as we will sail nearby the New England banks. If you want to join us, help us to fix the hull of the ship first.
24 Before we depart, we need to get more supplies. Regrettably, government funding leaves a lot to be desired. Let's start by getting more fuel as we don’t want to end up stranded at the sea.
25 The pier to which we want to berth the ship is rotten and could fall apart at any given moment. I would hate to see anybody getting injured. Building a new one should not be a problem.
26 It’s great to be back on the open sea as I can observe the aquatic life below. At the moment, we are experimenting with several sizes of nets so small fish can escape. Give it a try.
27 We are back on land. Can you help the crew to anchor the ship as the mechanism seems to be broken? Thank you for your help out there, I think I have enough material to write a new book.
28 The book is finished. I have titled it The Sea Around Us. I think that the worst thing about being on the sea is that fresh fruit is hard to come by. Let us get us some and enjoy it under that shade tree.

34 Some pests can destroy even electrical equipment. US Department of Agriculture wants to use pesticides against them and they may go overboard. I’m going to need more local samples.
35 We are not alone. A certain environmental organization has asked me to expose the government’s practices and how it influences both the fauna and flora. Let's check the fish from the nearby creek.
36 Excessive research is required to persuade the public that the overuse of certain pesticides will harm the environment. Let's build a small laboratory to study them so we can build our case.
37 I have found allies among scientists that document the negative effects that these pesticides have both on the environment and humans. They have some infested material they want me to check.
38 All the data and information that I have obtained can be compiled into another book. Lately, I have not been feeling very well but I will do everything to finish it. The public must know!
39 The future looks bleak if we keep on abusing that pesticide. I cannot imagine this world without hearing the birdsong anymore. The Silent Spring will be a fitting name for the book. Spread the word about it.
