Just a minute, I will be with you shortly. Please, take a seat. But if you help me put these crates away it will be faster. Inside are the recordings from our latest research voyage. |
2 |
So you are a captain, right? We need someone with a ship to help me and my assistant Bruce with research. It’s an important job but it requires a small initial investment. |
3 |
The previous ship owner has ended our collaboration on short notice. He probably found a more lucrative business. We still have our equipment on his ship. Let’s take it to your vessel. |
4 |
We are mapping the ocean floor. I will be staying here in the lab. You go with Bruce out to the sea. It will be best if you choose a motor vessel. That will be faster than the sailing ship we used before. |
5 |
The ocean floor is mapped with sonar. Bruce will take the sounding profiles on the ships and then you bring them to me. I will process them here and make a model of the ocean floor. |
6 |
Bruce will be also taking samples of water, dirt, and rocks from the ocean floor. Maybe even some fish or other sea inhabitants. He is a good scientist but no sailor. So watch him out there. |
7 |
I hope you have a crew for these voyages. The crew we used on Atlantis was very helpful. Atlantis was our previous research vessel. I didn’t meet the crew myself but Bruce spoke of them highly. |
8 |
It’s a pleasure working with you, captain. Please take these crates with you to the ship. They are for the samples you will collect. Bruce is already waiting for you on the pier. |
9 |
Back already? I trust you encountered no problems. There was quite a storm here. I am going to check the sounding profiles. You can join me if you wish. It’s a fascinating thing. |
10 |
The sounding profiles are of bad quality. Probably the old sonar will be at fault here. If we only had the money for a new one. Unfortunately, our budget is pretty tight. |
11 |
With this new sonar, we will make much better soundings. We just need a few copper wires to connect it to the other equipment on your ship. Once you get the wire, leave it to Bruce. |
12 |
Have you taken any samples on that last voyage? The soundings are of little use to us but I will get what I can from the samples. Bruce said you collected some rocks from the ocean floor. |
13 |
Can you go on another research trip tomorrow? We direly need those soundings to continue our model of the ocean floor. I promised to present our findings to my boss at the end of the week. |
14 |
Bruce will be joining you again. I so wish I could go with you too. But it’s an antiquated rule that women can’t work on ships. Ridiculous! I will find a way, just give me some time. |
15 |
You had much better weather this time. And a new sonar too. So I hope these soundings will be perfect. I will check it out while you unload the rest of the equipment. |
16 |
The information I have from those soundings is groundbreaking. Literally! It seems there is a deep rift valley on the floor of the Atlantic. We need to make more trips to find out more. |
17 |
I am going to present the findings to my boss today. If I manage to present them nicely, he might approve to increase our budget. If we want the map of the whole Atlantic, we will need it. |
18 |
The boss was really impressed. With the additional money, we can buy new equipment and I can pay you for more research voyages. We will be out there much more than before. |
19 |
We need to make space on the ship for the new equipment. I see there are still some samples from previous voyages. Please bring all the rocks to the geological laboratory for analysis. |
20 |
This time I won’t be staying in the lab while Bruce does all the fieldwork. I want to go out there too. If any of the crew have a problem with that, I am sure we can find a replacement. |
21 |
I am glad your sailors are so accepting. Let’s set sail! I have the coordinates we need to reach. There I will use the sonar to map the seafloor. Meanwhile, you can catch some fish. |
22 |
It seems the rift valley continues all the way south through the whole length of the Atlantic. Do you have a long chain? I want to collect a sample of the dirt from down below. |
23 |
We have collected some important data on this voyage. I need to go think about this at home. Thank your sailors for accepting me on the ship. Give them a few bottles of wine from me. |
24 |
This data supports a theory that was long argued about. If I can collect some more evidence, our findings will be really important for the whole world. Do we still have some money for further research? |
25 |
The theory of continental drift talks about the movement of the continental plates. No one before us was able to prove it. But maybe we can! We need to collect data from an earthquake epicenter. |
26 |
There should be an earthquake soon. I have located the epicenter of the last two earthquakes in this area. We need to be out there and take the soundings during the earthquake. |
27 |
The epicenter should be to the west from here. Can you leave a few sailors here on a boat? Just in case the predictions are wrong. Bruce will stay here with them. He will operate the sonar. |
28 |
An earthquake on the sea can be just as dangerous as on land. It can create a massive wave, a tsunami, that will wash us down ships and all. Let’s hope that won’t happen. |
29 |
That wave has damaged the sails on our ship but we made it. And these soundings are sure to help us a lot. Now let’s go back. I can’t wait to inspect them in the lab. But you will have to fix the sails. |
30 |
You will have to go on the next research voyage without me. We have some new equipment you need to take with you. Bruce knows how to use it, so leave that to him. |
31 |
I think we need a specialist to plot the earthquake epicenters in the Atlantic. To do that ourselves would take a lot of time. I will look for someone, I just need some money that I can offer them. |
32 |
Howard Foster will plot the earthquake epicenters for us. He is working with Bruce on another project and promised to help with this too. I will give him some rock samples in exchange. |
33 |
When we overlay our map of the ocean floor and Foster’s map of earthquakes the location of the Atlantic Ridge and the epicenters is the same. This could be the proof we are looking for. |
34 |
I must talk to Bruce. He was hesitant to believe my theory but this should convince him. I will invite him for coffee and surprise him. But I need sugar. He always drinks his coffee awfully sweet. |
35 |
We have enough data to publish our findings. I want to thank everyone who contributed to this. I think inviting them to dinner and thanking them personally would be nice. |
36 |
It seems there is a rift valley inside the Atlantic Ridge. We need to send another research vessel into the South Atlantic to make more soundings. Is your crew ready? |
37 |
Now that we published our paper and the map of the Northern Atlantic ocean floor, there are people asking to join our project. We just need more equipment and we can expand the research. |
38 |
I would like to examine the seafloor of other oceans too. I have several graduate student assistants who can help me complete this research. After I get the money, we can start. |
39 |
The Columbia University for which I work is planning the construction of a new building for my faculty. I told them you could help with the materials. I hope you will find the time. |
40 |
I knew you would be able to assist them. They will need some marble for the floors. The university has a certain image to uphold. I am going to draw new maps while you work on that delivery. |
41 |
I will get a new office and lab once the new faculty building is finished. I will be able to continue my work more efficiently there. With the new data from all my assistants, I will need an upgraded space. |
42 |
I usually eat my meals at the canteen. But in the last few days, they made really poor meals. Maybe you could help them with the ingredients. Otherwise, I will have to start cooking myself. |
43 |
Those fresh fish really made a difference in their cooking. The cafeteria manager was really pleased with your assistance. He wants you to work with them long-term. |
44 |
I have just received data from my assistant researching the Indian Ocean. I’m going to process them right away. My new lab is still not done. Can you make sure all the equipment I need is purchased? |
45 |
This new lab is much larger so there is space for more furniture. Most important is some sort of storage for all those samples and maps. A few metal shelves should do. |
46 |
The Pacific is just too vast. I have sent three of my assistants to map the ocean floor there. But it will still take them a few years. Would your sailors be able to help them out? |
47 |
Our new faculty building is ready to be used. I need you to help me move to my new office. There is a lot of stuff that has to be relocated. I will also need some crates to put it all into. |
48 |
Now bring me all the rock samples I had in my old lab. I need to catalog them and store them properly. I had no space and time to do that in my old office. |
49 |
I have received all the data I need to make a map of the ocean floor of the whole world. This is my ultimate work. I think we deserve a glass of wine before I start drawing. |
50 |
The map is done. I have contacted the painter Heinrich Beran to make a painting of the maps I drew. He will start right after receiving his fee. We have done it, captain. Thank you. |
Final |
We have done some pretty amazing discoveries together. So here is something special for you. |
