Level Description
Hello, my friend! Interested in a fun fishing trip? I have a boat for charter which you can take out to the bay and enjoy some carefree fishing while I captain it.
Ah, so you are a captain yourself! If you ever wish to take a break from your duties, you know where to find me. Right here on this pier.
I haven’t seen you here before. You are probably not from Washington, right? I know all the local captains. If you are a woman in this business, you have to know your colleagues and competition.
I am Marilyn but call me Mars. If you are staying here for a while, we will be seeing each other. So don’t be a stranger and stop by. I am sure we can help each other out.
Actually, why don’t you come to Blue’s Jazz Club tonight? I am playing with my husband there. After the show, we can have a glass of wine and chat.
So glad you came! This is Gaylord, my husband. Now don’t smile, it’s a traditional name in his family. Take a seat and enjoy the show. There should be some free tables at the back.
How did you like the show? We actually started as musicians and fishing was just our hobby. Then we made it our main business. I love singing but it wouldn’t pay for the house we are building.
We charter our boats to fishermen who don’t have their own vessels. We also do commercial fishing ourselves. It’s a tough job, but I like to be out on the water.
We are planning on moving to Port Angeles. We could use some help with the transfer. Our boats are not suited for a large move. Can we use your ships?
Thanks for helping us out. If some of your friends want to go fishing, send them to us. Gaylord and I will give them a bonus rate on the charter.
I have trouble starting my boat. The Vagabond is not the newest vessel but she served me well till now. Could you have a look at her? Maybe you can fix her.
Thank you. The engine is starting now. But I should have her looked upon by a professional ship mechanic once I save up the money. The motor still doesn’t sound quite right.
Vagabond is ready to get back in business again. But maybe it’s time to look for a new boat. The last winter has taken its toll on this girl. The deck is all cracked and twisted.
Until I get a new boat, I must take good care of Vagabond. It would be nice to have a boat shed where we could store her during the worst winter weather.
The chartering business is slow this year. I was thinking of getting a bottomfish license to increase our income. With that, we can expand our commercial fishing activities.
Bottomfishing uses different methods to catch the fish living near the bottom of the sea or lake. It can be more difficult to catch the fish hiding in the mud down there.
With the bottomfish license, I can catch crabs and other shellfish. These can fetch quite a nice sum when sold to restaurants. But we will need some new equipment for fishing those.
We are sailing out on our first crabbing trip tomorrow. Join us if you can. I am still not sure about this type of fishing so if you know someone experienced in it, invite them too.
I will be also conducting a sightseeing voyage. One of my friends reached out to me and asked if I would be available. We need all the business we can get, so I happily agreed.
The sightseeing voyage is supposed to be a birthday surprise for one of the guests. So we need to get a cake too. I am no expert on desserts. Could you take care of it, please?
The birthday voyage was a great success. Maybe I will make some more sightseeing voyages in the future. Now help me clean up this mess. I have a fishing trip booked in an hour.
My man is having a difficult conversation with the workers building our house. They ask much more for the material than was initially agreed upon. You know a bit about construction materials, right?
So you helped resolve the situation with our house? That’s great. I just returned from the fishing trip. Can you help me unload all the fish we caught?
I have finally scrounged up enough money for a new boat. I ordered a vessel made of fiberglass. I am going on a test voyage tomorrow. I just need to pay for the fuel or bring my own.
She is perfect! My new boat, Satin Doll, will be the princess of the bay. She was more expensive than expected, but she is worth every cent. Could you give me a loan? I will pay it back with interest.
I can’t wait to take Satin Doll on the first fishing trip. Let’s get the fishing equipment from my old boat and we can go right now.
I love my new boat. But now I must decide what to do with the Vagabond. Maybe one of your sailors would be interested in buying her. They can come for a test voyage.
I already have a prospective buyer for Vagabond. But he insists that I fix up a few things on her first. Would you help me out with it?
With the money, I earned by selling Vagabond I can speed up the house construction. Let’s get some more material right away.
I have even some cash left for the house furnishing. We are going with a modern coastal style. Blues, whites, lots of wood, and marine decor are what I have in mind.
Now let’s get back to work. We have another fishing charter planned for today. And the fish won’t get caught by themselves.
We can’t move out of the bay. There is a large tanker blocking the way. I don’t know what happened but maybe you could find out and help if possible.
Great! We can continue on the planned journey. We got a bit delayed but I am sure the fish won’t mind but the customer might. We will have to give him a discount for the charter.
Unexpected accidents can always happen. But in the end, all is well. Our customer understood it was not in our hands. Now weigh the anchor and let’s go back to port.
I am helping organize the next Charter Boat Association meeting here in Neah Bay. I could use your help with some logistics. Can your crew send out the invites?
The Association is setting regulations for the operation of charter boats. It also ensures all are treated fairly and that the business is beneficial for all parties.
Let’s prepare some food and drink for the meeting. I promised to take care of the catering too. There is a great bakery in town. We can order bread from them.
How does the venue for the Association meeting look? Do we have enough tables to place the food on? I think we should get more chairs.
I admit I took it upon myself to organize the meeting to get a better name among other sailors. There is still some prejudice against female captains among sailors.
The Association's meeting is over and so is our time together. I have one more request of you though. Would you join me on our last fishing trip?
Final Thank you for your help. Don't forget your reward, captain.
