Level Description
1 Hello, captain! It’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Phyllis Sopwith, and I’d love to welcome you to London. Shall we go to lunch? I have some things I’d like to discuss with you.
2 I’ve heard a lot about you and know that you’ve experienced many an adventure, so I wanted to see if you’d like a new challenge: helping my husband Thomas and I win the prestige America’s Cup.
3 America’s Cup is a race between two yachts, the current holders against a worthy challenger. This year, we will be challenging on behalf of the Royal Yacht Squadron and hoping to defeat the American holders.
4 The race is only a couple of months away, so we need to begin building our yacht soon. The Americans won last year, so we’ll definitely need a better yacht than last time to win now.
5 The work on the yacht is progressing well. We’ve ordered some special materials for it as well. We’ll be up against the Vanderbilts, and they’re richer than God, so we will need something to help us out.
6 The hull of the yacht is done, but it does need a few finishing touches before we can set her out on the sea. We want the boat to be as light as possible, but it still needs some reinforcements.
7 We just need to hang up the sail, and our yacht is ready for the sea! Thomas and I have decided to name her Endeavour to represent what an uphill battle this race will be.
8 We have to get Endeavour out to Newport in Rhode Island where the race will take place. Transporting a yacht across the Atlantic is not cheap, and we’re currently low on money. Could you help out?
9 Alright, now that we’re here in Newport, let’s get some coffee and try to figure out what our opponents might try in the race and how we can put together tactics against that.
10 All of my husband’s crew have gone on strike and left. The race is in two days! They refuse to come back, so I will need you and two of your finest men to join us to race in America’s Cup.
11 We have time for one training with the five of us as the crew on Endeavour. The odds of us winning now are close to zero, being put together at the last minute, but we should still go and give it our all.
12 Here we are at the starting line alongside the Vanderbilt’s yacht, Rainbow. We’ve been thrown into this at the last minute, so there is no pressure on us. I just hope it won’t be a complete embarrassment.
13 The start was a bit difficult for us whereas Rainbow flew out of the traps like the wind. It will be tough to try and catch up to them in this first round but let’s give it a go.
14 Rainbow got the first round quite easily. We struggled around the bend a lot, but once we get more synchronised as a crew, we should be better. Let’s eat something to get our strength before the next round.
15 The next two rounds have not been much better for us. The rounds are getting a bit closer, but we’re losing 3-0 and on the verge of losing and not even winning a point. I’m worried, captain.
16 That was much better! We’ve won the fourth round! Some great manoeuvring from my husband at the helm and great teamwork from us. The hull did take some damage, so let’s fix it up before the next round.
17 Another point to us, great work again, captain! It is now 3-2, but if we complete this comeback, it would be one of the greatest stories in the history of America’s Cup. Let’s go win this round!
18 It was a narrow finish, but Rainbow edged it, they won. Still, I’m incredibly proud of our crew, put together at the last minute, and how close we made it. I'd like to thank you and your men for the race.
19 Once all the handshakes and ceremonies are done, let’s book our travel and transport for the yacht back to London. It’s been a fun experience, but it’s time to go back home and re-group.
20 Let’s enjoy a drink together and look back at our experience. It was a good time, but this is not over for me. I want to come back to this competition and win it all, and next time we will be ready.
21 Welcome back, captain! I’m thrilled to have you back in London after a couple of years. Shall we go get something to eat and catch up? We do have a lot to talk about.
22 I’m taking you to my favourite fish and chips place. I’m sure you will enjoy it, they bring in fresh fish every morning. I’ve been doing alright, but all along I’ve been focused on one particular goal…
23 Thomas and I will be challenging for the 1937 America’s Cup! The Vanderbilts are still the holders, and they haven’t lost this whole time. Will you be joining our team once again?
24 This time we will be properly prepared for the race, and we will need a new yacht. We have six months to prepare, so let’s order the materials and get to work.
25 I want to have this yacht made from scratch, so let’s begin with the hull. I want it to be made of light metal so the yacht can be fast and cut through the water with ease.
26 The hull looks great, captain, but I want it to be a very particular shape. I’ve had a nautical designer draw it up, and I believe this can give us the best chance of victory.
27 The hull is perfect, so now it is time to build the deck and then our mast. I want to use wood for these, but once again with the emphasis on keeping the yacht as light as possible.
28 The yacht is almost complete! It really does look stunning, captain. This is the boat that we can go and win with. Now we just need to hang up the sail and she will be ready for the water!
29 We’ve taken the yacht out for a spin on the water, and the way she moves is truly incredible. Thomas and I have decided to name her Endeavour II, but this time we will be victorious!
30 Thomas and I have decided that this time, I will be at the helm. I have done a lot of yachting since the past race, so I’m confident about it. Get your two best men, and let’s get to work.
31 We’ve been training hard for a couple of months now and we’ve really become quite good. It’s time for us to pack for our trip to Newport and begin mentally preparing for the race.
32 Once again, we have to pay for the transport of our boat over to America. I want to pay extra this time to make sure it is properly protected. We cannot be careful enough with Endeavour II.
33 Let’s have some lunch and talk about our opponent. The Vanderbilts have ordered another yacht built, the Ranger. It is said she is very fast, but the construction was delayed so they had less practice time.
34 The time has come. Here we are at the starting line, Endeavour II alongside Ranger. The Vanderbilts look nervous, so I will be coming out aggressive. We need to make sure we have enough energy for the race.
35 We’ve lost the first round, unfortunately! Maybe we should change the crew. I know is not typical to change them between the races but we should do everything in our power to win. Let’s work hard!
36 I can’t believe it but the Vanderbilts are now leading 3-0! The victory is escaping our grasp. Let’s eat something and focus on the finish. Maybe we can still turn the tables.
37 Unfortunately, we did not manage to win the cup. I can’t lie, I am disappointed. But we need to concentrate on the future. If we train more, maybe we will have more luck next time. Still, this was a sad loss.
38 The cup and the prize money all go to the Vanderbilts. We will need your help with getting back to London. The voyage will be quite expensive.
39 The local government of Kensington, the part of London that I am from originally, has decided to put up a statue in my honour. I’d love for you to join me and my husband at the unveiling.
